The lesson of the 20th Century has been that it is far riskier
to your wealth to not be invested in equities than to be
fully exposed to equities during a lifetime. A lifetime of
equity investing makes the Great Depression, the mid
seventees, and the '87 Crash totally irrelevant. Looking
at the chart of the DJIA from 1929 to today, the horrible
events you described are nothing more than blips on a
vertical ascent.
