BELLMORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork)

Someone cut the head off a statue of the Virgin Mary and left it lying on the ground at a Knights of Columbus chapter on Long Island, police said Thursday.

Between 10:19 a.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday, someone broke the Statue of the Blessed Mother outside the Knights of Columbus chapter at 2333 Bellmore Ave. in Bellmore, Nassau County police said.

A photo released by police showed the statue in its alcove tipped off its pedestal, and lying partially on the ground. The head of the statue has been cut off and is lying in the dirt.

“Members of the chapter were devastated by the vandalism outside the council building.

Member Bill Palladino discovered the crime when he drove by. Palladino said. “I just can’t understand or fathom why they would want to do something like this.”

Two other similar incidents have happened in Nassau County over the past year, police said. Another incident happened at the same Knights of Columbus chapter on July 16 of last year, and a Nativity Scene at Bedford Avenue and Broadway in Bellmore was similarly damaged three days after Christmas last year.

The statue that was broken this week was the replacement for the one that was damaged in July.

“It’s emotional,” Cannon said. “We as a council, it’s part of our faith. It hurts, is what it really does.”

“You can break it as many times as you want,” added Knights of Columbus Deputy Grand Knight James Ruescher. “But at the end of the day it’ll always be bigger and better.”

Police asked anyone with information about the crime to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. Callers need not give their names.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000.

FDIC puts credit squeeze on gun sellers...

'Operation Choke Point'...

Targeted? Gun sellers say ‘high risk’ label from feds cuts off banking options, restricts businessObama plan pressures financial institutions
By Kelly Riddell

The Washington Times Sunday, May 18, 2014

Gun retailers say the Obama administration is trying to put them out of business with regulations and investigations that bypass Congress and choke off their lines of credit, freeze their assets and prohibit online sales.

Since 2011, regulators have increased scrutiny on banks’ customers. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in 2011 urged banks to better manage the risks of their merchant customers who employ payment processors, such as PayPal, for credit card transactions. The FDIC listed gun retailers as “high risk” along with porn stores and drug paraphernalia shops.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department has launched Operation Choke Point, a credit card fraud probe focusing on banks and payment processors. The threat of enforcement has prompted some banks to cut ties with online gun retailers, even if those companies have valid licenses and good credit histories.

“This administration has very clearly told the banking industry which customers they feel represent ‘reputational risk’ to do business with,” said Peter Weinstock, a lawyer at Hunton & Williams LLP. “So financial institutions are reacting to this extraordinary enforcement arsenal by being ultra-conservative in who they do business with: Any companies that engage in any margin of risk as defined by this administration are being dropped.”

A Justice Department representative said the agency is conducting several investigations that aim to hold accountable banks “who are knowingly assisting fraudulent merchants who harm consumers.”

“We’re committed to ensuring that our efforts to combat fraud do not discourage or inhibit the lawful conduct of these honest merchants,” the Justice Department said in a May 7 blog post.

But gun retailers say their businesses are being targeted in the executive branch’s efforts:

T.R. Liberti, owner and operator of Top Gun Firearms Training & Supply in Miami, has felt the sting firsthand. Last month, his local bank, BankUnited N.A., dumped his online business from its service.

An explanatory email from the bank said: “This letter in no way reflects any derogatory reasons for such action on your behalf. But rather one of industry. Unfortunately your company’s line of business is not commensurate with the industries we work with.”

Black Rifle Armory in Henderson, Nevada, had its bank accounts frozen this month as the bank tried to determine whether any of Black Rifle’s online transactions were suspicious. In 2012, Bank of America suddenly dropped the 12-year account of McMillan Group International, a gun manufacturer in Phoenix, even though the company had a good credit history, the owner said. Gun parts maker American Spirit Arms in Scottsdale, Arizona, received similar treatment by Bank of America, the country’s largest banking institution.

“This seems to be happening with greater frequency and to many more dealers,” said Joe Sirochman, owner of American Spirit Arms. “At first, it was the bigger guys — gun parts manufacturers or high-profile retailers. Now the smaller mom-and-pop shops are being choked out, and they need their cash to buy inventory. Freezing their assets will put them out of business.”

Choking off access to banks

After McMillan Group owner Kelly McMillan publicized Bank of America’s action on his Facebook account, he found that thousands of small gun-shop owners across the country were in the same situation.

Banks were either dropping them, freezing their accounts or refusing to process their online sales
, so he opened a credit card processing company for the gun industry called McMillan Merchant Solutions.

“Four generations of my family have been in this industry. This is my way to give back,” said Mr. McMillan, adding that many of his customers were denied banking access because of the nature of their business. “This is an attempt by the federal government to keep people from buying guns and a way for them to combat the Second Amendment rights we have. It’s a covert way for them to control our right to manufacture guns and individuals to buy guns.”

BankUnited N.A., which dropped Top Gun Firearms Training & Supply in Miami from its customer list, declined to comment.

In a statement to The Washington Times, Bank of Americasaid: “We would not deny banking services to an organization solely on the basis of its industry.”

The banking giant blamed a misunderstanding with the Arizona gun manufacturers McMillan Group International and American Spirit Arms.

However, the American Banking Association, the industry’s advocacy group in Washington, said businesses deemed “risky” will be frozen out of the financial system if the Justice Department continues Operation Choke Point because the regulatory burden and risk of investigation will be too great for less-specialized banks to bear.

“We’re being threatened with a regulatory regime that attempts to foist on us the obligation to monitor all types of transactions,” Richard Riese, a senior vice president at the American Bankers Association, said in the April 28 issue of American Banker. “All of this is predicated on a notion that the banks are a choke point for all businesses.”

In an interview with The Times, Mr. Riese said the cost of doing business with gun retailers outweighs the benefits for some banks, given that regulators deem the industry as “risky,” state laws vary on the sale of guns and ammunition, and the Justice Department’s enforcement.

The Independent Community Bankers of America, an association for small banks, said enforcement actions from the Justice Department are too broad and overly aggressive.

“While preventing fraud is a top concern for community banks, it needs to be balanced with ensuring that businesses and consumers that operate in accordance with applicable laws can still access payment systems,” bankers association President Camden Fine told the Justice Department in an April 7 letter. “ICBA requests that the DOJ suspend Operation Choke Point immediately and focus its resources directly on businesses that may be violating the law, rather than targeting banks providing payment services.”

Justice’s operation threatens to “close access to the financial system to law-abiding businesses, because the mere prospect of an enforcement action is sufficient to cause financial institutions to restrict access to their payment systems to only established companies that present low risks,” the organization said.

‘No statutory authority’

Regulations on the financial industry have increased over the past few years, said Thomas P. Vartanian, chairman of Dechert LLP, a global law firm specializing in regulatory and financial matters.

He noted the chilling effect of overregulation by the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, an interagency behemoth that includes the departments of Commerce, Justice, Labor, Education, Homeland Security and Justice along with the Internal Revenue Service, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Secret Service, the FBI, the Social Security Administration and the Federal Trade Commission.

“The key to effective regulation is the balancing between too little and too much regulation,” Mr. Vartanian said. “The problem here is that there are now so many regulators, including the Department of Justice, with their fingers on the scales on that balancing act.”

Congressional Republicans say the Obama administration is using its regulatory powers to shutter industries it doesn’t like. Last year, 31 Republicans accused the Justice Department and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. of intimidating banks and payment processors to “terminate business relationships with lawful lenders.”

In a March hearing before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs subcommittee on consumer protection, Sen. David Vitter, Louisiana Republican, complained that several payday lenders — another industry labeled “risky” by the administration — were being dropped by their banks in his home state.

“There is a determined effort from [the Justice Department]
to the regulators to cut off credit and use other tactics to force [payday lenders] out of business,” Mr. Vitter said. “I find that deeply troubling because it has no statutory basis, no statutory authority.”

In a House hearing in April, FDIC acting General Counsel Richard Osterman defended his agency’s definition of what constitutes a “risky” business — subject to money laundering or other criminal behavior — but made it clear that no bank is outright prohibited from serving any such companies.

“We have actually put out a policy statement on this issue to make it very clear from the very top that as long as financial institutions are properly managing their relationships and the risks, they’re neither prohibited nor discouraged from providing these services,” Mr. Osterman said.

“Basically, what we’re saying is, these types of programs can be, can involve high-risk activities that could create litigation risk and reputation risk for financial institutions,” he said. “So, they need to do due diligence to ensure that the folks who they’re banking are acting in a safe and sound manner.”

But the cost of that due diligence, coupled with the threat of a lawsuit for doing business with a customer in an industry the government has defined as risky, is having a chilling effect on legitimate companies such as gun dealers, said Mr. Weinstock, the Hunton & Williams lawyer.

“We are one of the most heavily regulated industries in America,” said Mr. Sirochman of American Spirit Arms. “We have to ship our guns to another federal licensed dealers for pickup. The people that are picking up the rifles have to go through a background check to make sure they don’t have any felonies. You can’t own a gun or pass the background check if you do.

“All this is, is an assault on our Second Amendment rights.”

6 Times Obama Used the Troops for Photo Ops
......................................................................................................................................................
breitbart.com

by Ben Shapiro 26 May 2014

On Sunday, President Obama made a surprise appearance in Afghanistan after sneaking out of the White House on Saturday night. There, he spoke with Afghan president Hamid Karzai via phone, because Karzai refused to speak with Obama in person. Obama told the troops, “For many of you, this will be your last tour in Afghanistan… America’s war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end.” Obama’s visit was marred by the White House’s release of the name of a top CIA officer in Afghanistan. He was in the country for under four hours.

The conspicuous timing of Obama’s visit, directly during the fallout over his administration’s mishandling of the Veterans Administration
, has raised some hackles. But this is not the first time that President Obama has utilized the troops as a photo op.

May 2012. Obama visited Afghanistan on the first anniversary of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, with his re-election campaign in full swing. He visited the presidential palace and gave a televised address that mentioned Bin Laden three times. “[O]ne year ago, from a base here in Afghanistan, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal that I set – to defeat al Qaeda and deny it a chance to rebuild – is now within our reach,”he stated.

December 2009. Obama announced his troop increases in Afghanistan from West Point to give him cover for taking a middle course on troop levels. In doing so, he implicitly ripped President Bush for involving the United States in Iraq. “The wrenching debate over the Iraq war is well-known and need not be repeated here. It's enough to say that for the next six years, the Iraq war drew the dominant share of our troops, our resources, our diplomacy, and our national attention – and that the decision to go into Iraq caused substantial rifts between America and much of the world,” Obama stated.

November 2009. Visiting Osan Air Base in South Korea, Obama announced he would be increasing military pay, and – noticing troops holding cameras and cameraphones – stated, “you guys make a pretty good photo op.”

October 2009. Obama met the coffins of soldiers coming home from Afghanistan at Dover air force base. According to the original New York Times report, “The images and the sentiment of the president’s five-hour trip to Delaware were intended by the White House to convey to the nation that Mr. Obama was not making his Afghanistan decision lightly or in haste.” That line was stealth edited out.

April 2009. Obama made a surprise visit to Iraq, apparently to troops “cheering wildly,” according to media accounts. But accusations flew in the aftermath that the cheering troops had been shuffled – one sergeant reportedly wrote that soldiers were “pre-screened, asked by officials ‘Who voted for Obama?,’ and then those who raised their hands were shuffled to the front of the receiving line. They even handed out digital cameras and asked them to hold them up.”

President Obama is a fan of photo ops. That’s why he has routinely banned the press from certain situations, instead releasing only approved photos. And when it comes to the troops, he’s happy to slash the military budget, do nothing about the Veterans Administration, and use the armed services for social experimentation, then to show up with the cameras when he needs a boost in the polls.

CA judge releases serial rapist -

Man Who Admitted To Raping 40 Women, May Have Raped 100, Released From Mental Hospital

They let him out once before, he did it again. At what point do you say enough is enough?

Via WFTV:

A California judge has ordered an admitted serial rapist be released from a mental hospital after spending more than four decades in and out of state custody.

KTTV reports the judge decided Christopher Hubbart must be released by July 7.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY: “We will do everything within our authority to protect the residents of Los Angeles County from this dangerous predator.”

Now, protesters have gathered outside the home where Hubbart is expected to live within the next month and a half.

PROTESTER: "We don't want him here."

RESIDENT: "Now, all these women and these children are going to be in fear."

MAYOR PRO TEM: "This is probably the biggest travesty of justice in my lifetime."

KABC points out Hubbart admitted to raping about 40 women between 1971 and 1982, but police say the number might be closer to 100. Hubbart was sentenced to prison in 1982, made parole in 1990 but was sent back to prison after committing another attack just two months later. He's been in a state mental hospital since 1996, but officials now say he is "fit for release." (Via KCBS)

Though the upcoming release does not mean complete freedom for Hubbart. He'll move into a rural home away from the hospital, but police say a GPS tracking device will constantly monitor him. (Via KNBC)

For the first six months to one year after his release, a supervisor will also be with Hubbart any time he goes out in public. Hubbart must also go to therapy sessions twice a week. Still, the Los Angeles Times reports many people are outraged. So far, it's not clear when Hubbart will be released.

Death By Gun Control
....................................................................................................................

u]

Death by "Gun Control"by Aaron Zelman and Richard W. Stevens
Introduction by James Bovard

Why must all decent non-violent people fight against "gun control"? Why is the right to keep and bear arms truly a fundamental individual right? You can find the answers in this new book.

People frequently ask why we are so dedicated to our cause? This book answers that question by collecting the key facts and arguments in one place.

People have asked us to present the whole JPFO argument in one place. We have done it. Available now in an easy-reading format and a handy size, the new book is entitled Death by Gun Control: The Human Cost of Victim Disarmament.

The message is simple: Disarmed people are neither free nor safe - they become the criminals' prey and the tyrants' playthings. When the civilians are defenseless and their government goes bad, however, thousands and millions of innocents die.

Professor R.J. Rummel, author of the monumental book Death by Government, said: "Concentrated political power is the most dangerous thing on earth." For power to concentrate and become dangerous, the citizens must be disarmed.

What disarms the citizens? The idea of "gun control." It's the idea that only the government has the right to possess firearms, and that citizens have no unalienable right to use force to defend against aggression.

Death by Gun Controlcarefully examines the "gun control" idea: its meaning, its purposes, its effects. It comes in many forms, but in every form it enables the evildoers and works against righteous defense.

Addition - For easier chart printing, download the Genocide Chart PDF file, it includes a text synopsis of this page.

When the gun prohibitionists quote a statistic about how many people are killed by firearms misuse, the discussion sometimes bogs down into whose crime stats to believe and how to count crimes vs. the defensive firearm uses. Death by Gun Control works on a level that nobody can dispute: documented world history.

In the 20th Century:

  • Governments murdered four times as many civilians as were killed in all the international and domestic wars combined.
  • Governments murdered millions more people than were killed by common criminals.
How could governments kill so many people? The governments had the power - and the people, the victims, were unable to resist. The victims were unarmed.

Truth They Cannot Refute

Death by Gun Control delivers the essential - and gut wrenching -- truth that the anti-self defense "gun control" advocates never try to refute. They simply cannot refute the facts or the formula.

Here's the Formula: Hatred + Government + Disarmed Civilians = Genocide

What makes the argument so powerful? Two factors. First, it makes common sense: unarmed defenseless people have no hope against armed aggressors. Second, it states the historical truth: evil governments did wipe out 170,000,000 innocent non-military lives in the 20th Century alone.

Using the facts in Death by Gun Control, you can take down the enemies of the Bill of Rights. The rights-destroyers have no answers to these facts. They have no excuses for their killer ideas.

JPFO's work has already borne fruit. John R. Bolton, an under-Secretary of State for the United States, this year urged the United Nations to recognize how an "oppressed non-state group defending itself from a genocidal government" will need ready access to firearms. Mr. Bolton might have been the first U.S. official in modern history to have argued to the UN that private citizens might need to be armed against their own killer governments.

Paul Harvey, the world-renowned and much admired radio commentator, last year reportedly broadcast the JPFO-produced facts linking "gun control" to the genocide of millions of unarmed civilians. Country by country, Mr. Harvey counted the murdered victims of civilian disarmament policies. Our new book could inspire other opinion-makers to join the chorus. Chapters in the book teach about:

  • The essential meaning of "gun control"
  • The Genocide Formula
  • The laws and policies that led to mega murder in Cambodia, China, Nazi Germany, Guatemala, Rwanda, Ottoman Turkey, Uganda, USSR
  • Zimbabwe's land invasions and firearms confiscations
  • Soaring crime in Britain after gun prohibition
  • Violence and police state polices in Japan
  • The right and duty of armed self-defense in Judaism and both Protestant and Catholic Christianity
  • Racist roots of "gun control" in America
  • The United Nations program to disarm civilians worldwide
  • Police state polices that condition Americans to accept victim disarmament.

Contributors: Leading Lights for Liberty

There is much more. Death by Gun Control features articles contributed by:
  • James Bovard (Introduction): "Not every firearms regulation leads inexorably to genocide. ... But there is no trigger guard on political ambition."
  • Stephen Halbrook, Ph.D. (Chapter 9): How Nazi firearms laws disarmed German Jews -- the whole story.
  • Jacob Hornberger (Chapter 10): Retelling the tragic, inspiring tale of The White Rose Society, college students who paid the ultimate price for freedom of mind.
  • Larry Pratt (Chapter 18): What the Bible says to Christians and Jews about self-defense and victim disarmament.

Endorsed by Experts

Honestly, is this book any good? Ask David Kopel, scholar at the Independence Institute and author of several books and many articles on firearms ownership and public policy. Mr. Kopel honored our book, saying that Death by Gun Control is "one of the best books ever written about the right to keep and bear arms."

There are many excellent books that advance our understanding of the right to keep and bear arms, the Second Amendment and the American liberty philosophy. Death by Gun Control is unique because it alone drives directly to the heart of the matter: that "gun control" ideas kill - both overseas and here in the U.S.A.

Past Breaking News: Wave good-bye to the era when Americans could say "it can't happen here." After the September 11 terror attack that killed 3,000 people, Americans no longer ignore "foreign" nations and the history of the world. America has been plunged deep into a perilous world, and our citizens are learning about war and invasion and attack and defense. The lesson of the 20th Century genocides cannot be dismissed any more. The logic of personal self-defense is hitting home. Death by Gun Control is perfectly timed to influence people during this window of opportunity. Order extra copies to spread the word.

More Breaking News: Since January 20th 2009 we have a new administration and one that appears totally bent on further eroding all rights, particularly with regard to the Second Amendment. They have many planned ways to "restrict" firearms ownership using "reasonable" limitations but these are a smoke screen for what appears more to be a real attempt to ban guns entirely. The instigation of rendering law abiding citizen's right to keep and bear arms and so render them defenseless must be seen as opening the door to potential genocide. Remember, the bad guys (of all description) will always be armed!

Federal effort could outlaw old ivory
........................................................................

Protect this signed Japanese bronze elephant sculpture with ivory tusks. It was made in about 1900 and sold in March 2014 at a Cottone Auctions in Geneseo, N.Y., for $920. If the suggested new antique ivory regulations become law, this antique bronze will be worthless because it will be illegal to sell it or even give it to a museum.

May 29, 2014 Terry Kovel/King Feature Syndicate

An heirloom bronze elephant with ivory tusks, great-grandmother's piano with ivory keys, a vintage ivory chess set or an antique silver teapot with a small ivory inset in the handle to keep it cool may be "endangered" by proposed laws that could be in place sometime in June. Buying, selling or importing ivory from recently killed African elephants already is illegal and has been for about 25 years.

But an executive order issued by President Barack Obama would extend the ban to include all antique ivory harvested from elephants that died before 1914. There would be a law forbidding sales, even gifts to museums, of any ivory, including antique pieces. This affects antiques dealers and collectors, knife makers and collectors, Inuit craftsmen, owners of mahjong and chess sets, and manufacturers of musical instruments, including guitars and violins — the list could go on.

And those in favor of strong endangered species laws want to also insist that all confiscated antique carved ivory art be destroyed — not even given to a museum. Already thousands of pounds of ivory art objects have been destroyed. This will cause huge losses to companies, collectors and museums.

There's still time to contact your U.S. senator, representative or the Fish & Wildlife Service to make your thoughts known. For links to more detailed information, go to www.kovels.com/latest-news/new-ivory-ban.html.
