The simple answer to your Merced question is that it is not the same market niche

That Intel has been playing in. Intel has never been a main-frame company. Intel does not hold market share at the high and middle end of the server market. Intel is strictly a Windows environment. Windows in all of its forms is not an enterprise strength OS.

In the 64 bit arena are Sun and IBM. No one should ever discount the ability of IBM to compete in what is essentially their market. Merced will only give Intel an entre into this market via UNIX.

I guess you could say that until Intel partners with a decent enterprise level OS like it did with MSFT on the desktop then Merced isn't certain to gain them market share.

There was an article on IBM coming out with its 64 bit CPU in 1998. That is earlier than Intel. Moreover the IBM chip may be faster.

I welcome any correction on these points from those closer to the chip such as Mr. Engel.
