Your backup drive could have had bad sectors on it, that would cause a failure. Just a guess.

I had the same problem with acronis. The backup image was was verified as good.

On the positive side I had to clean instal the system software, and add all the applications. Much to my surprise I freed up over 100 GBs. Don't know why, but all the bloat was in outlook files (office 2010). A great app to visualize your drive is WinDirStat (PMS witch posted this in the past).
