GOOGLE TOPS APPLE AS THE WORLD'S MOST VALUABLE BRAND - HOW DID THEY DO IT?
May 21, 2014 / Ben Schoon
itechtriad.com

The stats are in and it's good news for Google as the company has now taken the top spot in the BrandZ Top 100 as the world's most valuable brand. Apple has held the spot for quite a while now but due to a 20% fall in estimated brand value, they have given up their spot. Google on the other hand saw an increase in value by nearly 40%.

How are these stats produced is a question you might be asking. Well BrandZ looks at the views of potential and current buyers, along with financial data, to estimate a brand's value. So how did Google do it? How did they overtake Apple as the most valuable brand?

While the word innovation has been synonymous with Apple for years, it isn't that way anymore. Recently the company has become almost stale by releasing products that don't excite the same way they used to. Google on the other hand has been taking huge risks that, for the most part, have paid off. Just look at the field of wearables. It's no lie that it will be the next big playing field in mobile technology and Google has already made two huge steps in it. They have not only used their software skills to their advantage with Android Wear, but they have even given hardware a go with Google Glass. While Android Wear hasn't been released yet or even noticed by the general public, most people have heard of Google Glass. Looking beyond the field of wearables Google has done even more bringing internet to the skies with Project Loon and bringing us lighting fast speeds with Google Fiber. It's needless to say when you look at the big picture that Apple has some catching up to do.

BREAKING..Lenovo overtakes Apple in US personal computer market
Chinese company Lenovo increased profit by 27pc to above $1bn for the first time, overtaking Apple in PC shipments to the US

Chinese technology giant Lenovo saw a 27pc jump in full year profit after overtaking Apple in PC shipments to the US for the first time.

The world’s biggest PC maker increased profit before tax to $1.01bn (£600m) for the year to the end of March, breaking the $1bn mark for the first time.

The company reported a 14pc increase in revenue to $38.7bn (£23bn) and sold 55m PCs during the year, increasing its global market share to 17.7pc.

The increase marks a 5pc year-on-year growth in market share, compared to an overall industry decline of 8pc during the same period.

Lenovo shipments to the United States overtook Apple’s for the first time in the fourth quarter, with the company becoming the third biggest provider of PCs with a market share of 10.8pc.

The fourth quarter also saw Lenovo’s revenue from Europe, the Middle East and Africa overtake revenue from China PC sales for the first time.

Lenovo increased smartphone shipments by 59.4pc in the three months to the end of March, outpacing the worldwide market by 28pc.

The company sold more tablets and smartphones than PCs for each of the four quarters in the 2013/14 financial year.

In total, Lenovo sold 55m PCs, 50m smartphones and 9.2m tablets throughout the year.

Yang Yuanqing, chief executive of the company, said Lenovo aims to increase sales by 69pc to 100m smartphone and tablet sales this coming year.

Lenovo also aims to be the world’s number one tablet PC maker within two years, said Mr Yang.

“The record sales and profits that we delivered last year prove that Lenovo can grow and deliver its commitments, no matter the market conditions”, he said.

“Not only did we strengthen our leading position in PCs, but we gained three points in tablets by quadrupling sales volume and became the fastest growing major smartphone company in the world.

“This demonstrates our capability to manage both businesses that are already mature, as well as those that are shifting to maturity”, added Mr Yang.

Shares for the company closed up 3.4pc at 9.44 Hong Kong dollars (72p) on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Wednesday.

CRAPple is a one product only company. The iPhone. Everything else, iPads, iPods, iMacs, are all imploding. God help you when the iPhone implodes as well.

BREAKING..Android vs. iOS: What Smartphone Do Customers Want Most?
JESS SCANLON | MORE ARTICLES
MAY 21, 2014
wallstcheatsheet.com

Smartphone customers’ preferences are tricky to determine as a group. Customers in the market for a new smartphone are more likely to want a Google ( NASDAQ:GOOG) ( NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android smartphone overall versus an Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS smartphone. When it comes to individual brands, 34 percent of customers want an iPhone according to Piper Jaffray’s Apple analyst Gene Munster.

Munster got these results by conducting a poll. The sample consisted of United States residents. Based on more than 1,000 responses, he found out that 50 percent of the survey sample that the firm polled wanted to buy an Android smartphone. Just 34 percent wanted an iOS phone. This is a drop from when Piper Jaffray conducted the same poll following the launch of the iPhone 5S. Back then, 50 percent of people wanted an iPhone versus 32 percent of people who wanted an Android.

This change in trends pretty normal considering where the iPhone 5 is in its cycle. Just as interest in the iPhone 4 dropped when rumors of the iPhone 5’s release announcement was on the horizon, the iPhone 5 is in an analogous place on the eve of the iPhone 6’s announcement release as mentioned in CNET’s coverage of the survey.

Even with this low level of interest, Munster is still predicting an increase in iPhone sales this quarter from the same quarter last year. He predicts that 35 million iPhones will be sold during this period, a 12 percent rise from last year. “While our survey is U.S. focused, we believe the data suggests that the iPhone, particularly the highest end 5s model, continues to have staying power given about a third of U.S. smartphone customers expect to purchase an iPhone in the next three months,” Munster told AppleInsider.

Out of the two iPhone 5 models released last year, the iPhone 5S has been more successful. It sold more than 9 million in its debut weekend alone. Since then, the smartphone model has continued to be one of Apple’s most successful smartphones to date. This may be part of the reason the analyst is optimistic about sales of the iPhone 5S through this quarter. It could also that Apple had better than expected sales for its March quarter, following a specular first quarter due to holiday sales.

The iPhone 6 will likely be announced on June 2 at Apple’s World Wide Developer’s Conference. This annual event is when Apple has taken to announcing its new products to the world in the form of keynote addresses that are live-streamed to the world. That is how Apple announced the iPhone 5 and its direct descendants the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Once it is announced, some customers will probably go to buy one of the iPhone 5 generation simply because interest in the model will drop even further compared to the glossy appeal of the upcoming iPhone 6.
