James,

Thanks for the response.

The main advantage that SSAX gains from opening up to a new platform is that it opens up a lot of potential new clients. While the AS/400 is a very popular platform (for which I program by the way), the sheer number of installed Unix installations is nothing to sneer at. It is understandable that growth in this new market would be slower than their AS/400 market.

Another advantage is: Their old clients who may have thoughts of migrating from the AS/400 to an "open" platform do not have to look elsewhere for another enterprise-wide application.

In short: They keep most of their old installations and gain a lot of potential clients.

One unrelated caveat however - the market seems to be dumping tech stocks at the moment and while SSAX may be a bargain now, the recent market downturn has opened up a lot of other bargains.

James,

SSA have very few large sites with UNIX due to problems with scaleability.

They believe most problems will be resolved during next year, but at present most sites which need more than a couple of hundred users are going with AS400. The architecture of BPCS 6 is very promising for UNIX so I think they will get over these problems. Baan are also having similar issues with scaleability.

Matt.
