5 charts which show why Americans should be jealous of the NHS

The UK’s National Health Service is the best healthcare system in the world, and the US system is the worst according to a new study by The Commonwealth Fund.

Here are the overall rankings.

As you can see, the NHS came top and the US healthcare system came dead last.

Here’s why Americans should be jealous of the NHS:

The NHS is free for patients

Nearly a quarter of Americans have problems paying their medical bills. Only 1 in 100 NHS patients have the same problem because the system is free at the point of use.

The NHS costs the government less

The UK government spends less than half the amount per person on the NHS than the US government spends on its system. The NHS is more efficient, which means the money can be used elsewhere.

Richer AND poorer people can get treatment

Poor Americans are much more likely to skip recommended care than rich Americans. In the UK neither rich nor poor people are very likely to put off recommended treatments due to cost.

Paying bills and paperwork is easier in the NHS

A tiny minority of NHS patients spend a lot of time on paperwork or disputing medical bills. In the US nearly one in five patients have this problem.

BUT, our population is not much healthier

UK citizens are not necessarily more healthy than other citizens when it comes to healthy life expectancy. The obesity crisis, a diabetes epidemic and widespread smoking have all contributed to this.
