Remember- one of Dahmer's victims escaped, if I remember rightly, and the police returned the guy to Dahmer. He was such a nice spoken quiet polite guy...

Obviously the police need some help dealing with people like this. They are not your "normal" obvious criminal- and their mental abilities may exceed those of their interrogators. But they have an area of weakness- because they are mentally ill, and there are ways to find that out- but we must, as a society, make some choices about that- and decide that it's important. If we do not, these sort of things will keep happening despite the pathetic warning signs, and cries for help- and we'll be reading about this sort of thing over and over. Which is not to say we can fix everything. With this nation awash in guns, this will keep happening- but we could probably diminish the occurrences, if we cared to.

In NC anyone can fill out a form for a 24 civil commitment on anyone else. You just allege that the person is a danger to himself or others and the cops go pick him up and bring him for a mental evaluation.
