You are right. The head has a very thick skull and slopes up. So you are not supposed to shoot for the head. One is supposed to shoot for the hips/legs and break it down first; and they can run 100 yards with a bullet in their heart. So I hear.

We don't pay any attention to black bears up here. They are pretty safe.

The story about grizzly's goes like this:

If you are hunting the bear a 30-06 is Ok, but if the bear he is hunting you, you need a 7MM.

As for handguns: if you shoot one with a 44 magnum, you will get the satisfaction the bear will die-----after it kills you.
