I am just passing what I heard to the others on the thread and asking confirmation! The source of this inforamtion is very realiable. They claim that the rason for the possible split in 1998 is depressed share prices which are stock at 135 to 145 which make the stock to expensive for average investors!

Yaakov,
I don't Know anything about MSFT split, but I heard many times that Microsoft considers its share price to be too high, not depressed. They complained that they couldn't afford to buy shares back to give their employees stock options.
