This is not the first Apple patent for a LM/Sapphire bezel, so it doesn't necessarily mean much, and IMHO its probably too late for the iPhone6... maybe not.

So if they trap the sapphire permanently they'll have to leave access somehow, which means a backplate, right?

I'm skeptical. Making 40 million parts as complicated as the bezel with injection molding would be a pretty big breakthrough. I'm still thinking their first foray will be a flat back piece with an aluminum bezel, or an attempt using a lesser product, like the watch or iPod, where production delay problems would not be so disastrous.

I can't imagine Apple betting the farm on this without testing it.
