It's not the eternal question. It's an easy question. It only seems to be a puzzle for folks who want it to be. For those of us who have children, there's a strong biological motive for us to make the world a better place for our own children. Also, all the studies on happiness show that people are happier doing things for others- so even from that perspective it's obvious why people would do good.

But sure- you could call it the eternal question if you like to misname things
