There are apparently a number of small start up companies developing switches for use with Gigabyte Ethernet systems. Lucent has just spent $200 million to acquire Prominet-one of these emerging companies.I do not believe this acquisition indicates that Lucent is putting their future into the GE technology. GE may be an attractive ,but smaller market than ATM. IMHO Lucent will continue to maintain its relationship with Yurie. You are right on the mark when you say ATM/SONET is the king of the backbone (WAN)
