I agree with lots of that i.e. empathy is certainly on a continuum. I have studied the sociopathic personality all my life; and have looked for them. One can spot them if they look for them. My undergraduate degree is in psychology, so we discussed the subject a lot.

I had a course from Dr Egger in college who was a world authority on sociopaths. He said when he was counseling them, he had to remind himself the person was a sociopath as they were often so affable.

They get through life mimicking what they learn people want to hear. We are all insecure, so when a person is affable and strokes our ego, we generally like that person. Why sociopaths do so well in business.

So where we "normal" people are often awkward in our personality and struggle with our philosophy of life all the time, sociopaths are using a script and do and say whatever they feel will work best for them. Why so many CEO's, business people and successful realtors are sociopaths.

I spent 30 years in politics and 22 years selling real estate and have seen how sociopaths excel in both arenas.

Sociopaths usually end up in jail because they make simple mistakes others don't make.

I pity anyone who has little empathy.

But there also seems to be a nurture part of empathy e.g. people lived with slavery for most of history and today we would all be abhorred by it. So it is a nature/nurture thing.

Many polls have shown one of the largest differences between dems and pubs is dems seem to show more compassion.
