Any ideas on how to accurately determine if new products released by competitors may affect SMTC, and if so, how to calculate the potential impact? Also, is there any accurate and reliable sales figures available, even if the information is not completely up to date?

Here is release from National Semiconductor, is this LDO competitive with any SMTC product?

The ability to continually develop new products, through R&D and the hiring of the best possible engineers, seems to be paying off lately, and will most likely become more important as competitive products are released. It seems SMTC has enjoyed the luxury of being first to market, superior product design, and sometimes the added benefit of both.
