I have run in to that type of thinking a lot. One complete idiot on SI asked me "Why don't you just kill yourself if you don't believe in anything? What keeps you from killing other people?"

The first time I heard this type of thing it blew me away. I mean what kind of moron thinks this way? All my life I've never had a desire to kill myself or anyone else, and I've never been religious. It would never have occurred to me that anyone would think being religious would "cure" angst - and it doesn't. Plenty or religious people give up, or kill others. And meaning can be found in just putting one foot ahead of the other. Existence itself is a pretty cool thing. I feel deeply sorry for people who only find meaning in life because of their religion, or even worse, because of what comes "after" life- because if there is nothing, they're basically living for something that will never happen. Strikes me as significantly more vacuous than living in the moment- but I don't mind if people want to live for fantasies, as long as they don't hurt other people because of their invisible friends, or their invisible friends' commands.
