They are handling that with "repairable" cache thing Paul talked
about - just hope this comes out ASAP

Compare the 486 to the Pentium then compare the classic Pentium to the MMX!

ok....

140 HP Ford/Honda Econnobox $15,000
340 HP Corvette $44,000
1000? HP Indy Car $1,000,000

Performance costs. Just the auto industry has people convinced their cars will last about 5 or 6 yrs where in fact you can get 20 or 30 yrs out of a car if ya change the oil regularly and live in CA where it doesn't rust....

With PC's, ya get Indy Performance in just 2 or 3 yrs for Econnobox prices. Of course this means that yesterday's Indy PC is alot cheaper, but it isn't obsolete. THat perception is just a problem with the industry. I still use my portable 486/75 to keep my data between my machines current while I type on my P5/200 MMX at home and P6/200 at work. The portable 486 (HP Omnibook 600C) works great on a plane....though a portable P5/166 is sure alot nicer, I do not feel compelled to spend another $3K to upgrade.

Paul,

I can't agree with you on your comments:

"This is consumer confusin brought about by not producing real performance level increases now from product to product. Compare the 486 to the Pentium then compare the classic Pentium to the MMX!"

Are you kidding ? The difference between a P-75 and a DX2/66 was so great that I have junked my 486's, ALL of them, and I don't know of anyone who went from a 486 to a Pentium (any flavor) who would EVER go back. ANY Pentium is DRAMATICALLY better than a 486. And I think that once we get the BX chipset, with a 100 MHz bus, we will feel that any PII with a BX chipset is dramatically better than all but the most powerful Pentiums (the 233 MMX might hold up, but certainly not the 166's, and probably not the 200's).

I won't argue that you can reach a saturation point based on what you are doing, and for many users it happens in the P-200 range, but to say that there have been no real performance increases is simply not an accurate depiction of the situation.
