Alan, I have sat and watched Emile and Robert spiritualize old testament prophesy for some time now and I firmly believe that they will not change to another viewpoint unless the Lord straightens out their thinking. From what I can find out, prior to the third century most thought was a pre-millinialist interpretation until the rise of the Alexandrian school of theology, which tried to harmonize bible revelation with the idealism of Plato, a point of view which subverted all scriptural doctrines, not simply prophesy. I think and many others think that this school of theology bordered on being heretical. As the Roman Catholic church began to grow, they advanced ritualism and departed, in some instances from pure doctrine. They reject a literal millenial reign of Christ on this earth.
Spiritualizing prophesy is definitely contradicted by the prophesies that have already been fulfilled. Hundreds of old testament prophesies have been literally fulfilled so they have to twist and throw out most of the pld testament in order for their doctrines to fit. I don't know how they get past many of the prophesies in Jeremiah about the restoration of Israel as a people and a race.

Jer. 31:
35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.
Jer. 30:
11 I am with you and will save you,' declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.'
Psalm 89:
28 I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail.
29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.
30 "If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes,
31 if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands,
32 I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging;
33 but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered.
35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness-- and I will not lie to David--
36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun;
37 it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah
There are many others but this satisfies me that God will restore Israel to prominence on this earth.
Regards,
Jim
