>>On any market strength or rally in the coming weeks, one may want to sell covered calls to hedge current holdings and buy cheap protective puts ahead of time for any long positions that one may leg into as the market slides.<<

Woudnt it be simpler to just sell puts instead of buying stocks and then buying puts? What time frame are you looking at? The asian problems been there for years and will take years to solve. There is also the russian problems which can affect the european recovery.
Not sure how an irrational market behaves other than they chop off the heads of ones who say bad things but only a hand or two if you do really well.

Judy: Help me out with something.

I pared off a lot of my long tech positions this week. Looking to finish that on any rally next week. Only exceptions: AMAT (added at 26) and IOM. Again, I'm afraid I'm losing perspective on IOM. From most accounts I see, it has little or no Asia concerns, in fact, the Malaysian currency thing is a short term positive. Its chart still looks pretty good to me, with new highs indicated. Am I deluding myself? I have made so much on it this year that I hate to get off but I utterly rationalized away a strong sell signal I got a few weeks ago and missed a chance to play the downside it has had. Will the market reward techs who post great quarters and appear to be minimally impacted by Asia?

I've got a laundry list of shorts for next week's rally, if any, and I'm sure you do too.
