Worse than conjecture.

We are seeing one study after another now finding that preventive procedures are not "worth" what we pay for them.

Someone pointed out on another thread a while back, if you want cheap health care the solution is simple -- just let people die. Quickly.

Keeping people alive is an expensive process. And like most everything else it is at the margins where a lot of the cost is found. Whether you're talking cars, health care or beef steaks -- the price differential can be substantial between "really high quality" and the "best available".
