Yep DJ, QoS is what it takes for GE to compete with ATM. Sam reported that MRV likes to expand into the telephony and video conferencing business next year and that will require QoS. Sam also mentioned something along the line of layer 1, 2, and 3 products. Layer 1 is the physical layer, it defines the media in which you transmit, i.e. fiber, coaxial cable, etc. Layer 2 is the data link layer, it takes care of collision detection, flow control, synchronization, etc. Layer 3 is the network layer, this is where the routing takes place, it finds the most efficient path to route the packets of a message through the maze of nodes in a network. I am glad to hear that MRV is working on solutions for all those 3 areas.

DJ, I couldn't tell for sure how far MRV has achieved in term of QoS. Even if I call Noam, he won't tell me because he likes to play the role of underdog to the giants. But I did pick up a few things reading all those press releases, advertisements from the company and what was stated by Noam yesterday regarding his strategic goals, that indeed MRV is working towards achieving QoS. If MRV can get QoS for GE, that will be the kiss of death for ATM.

I have been saying all along since the beginning of this year that Direct IP is very important business for MRV. Yep they are working on patenting all those technologies. They also got an ASIC solution. And their Direct IP works hand in hand with GE to provide QoS. So in the future, I believe MRV will either receive royalty income from the competition or they can make money selling the ASIC.

Lucent just bought out Ipsilon. Ipsilon is also a champion in Direct IP. You can tell that this is an important area of business.
