The release of Snow Leopard came nearly two years after the introduction of Mac OS X Leopard, the second longest time span between successive Mac OS X releases (the time span between Tiger and Leopard was the longest).

Unlike those of previous versions of Mac OS X, the goals of Snow Leopard were improved performance, greater efficiency and the reduction of its overall memory footprint. Addition of new end-user features was not a primary consideration: its name was intended to signify its goal to be a refinement of the previous OS X version, Leopard.

Music to MY ears. Give me upgrades but give me significant upgrades that are quality builds. I don't want to go through learning a new system and fixing the resultant problems every year.

And too... its pretty obvious the latest machine are downgrades. Sorry I just can't get excited about a new feature that is no optical drive.
Slightly faster processors... nothing more.

I'm starting to seriously look at used 27" iMacs. Just a cursory glance in Craigslist shows the new models are... icky compared to previous generations. My last machine was a used top end Quicksilver 2002 Dual which was almost as fast as my top end iMac Quad i7 which cost me 2K. My iMac is faster than the new 2K iMac 27". I ended up replacing the Quicksilver after 8 years because I couldn't get current software... so I want this machine to be the latest possible so I can extend its life until that software thing becomes a problem again. If Apple goes back to RISK chips... sheech.

CRAIGS
$2050 OBO - Trades possible for the right MacBook Pro
Processor: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 20 GB 133 MHz DDR3 (room for upto 32 GB)
with DVD SuperDrive and SD card reader in the computer! The new iMac does not have this!
2 TB SATA Disk Drive
250 GB Flash Storage

STORE.APPLE
$1,999.00
Processor: 3.4GHz i5
8GB (two 4GB) memory
1TB hard drive

Apple always puts in small RAM cards you have to throw out later. So add that cost.

With a little cash I'm pretty sure I'll find a fast i7 27" loaded with RAM for much less than $1500. This will mirror my current machine but will be faster. Dump in a Flash Drive and I'll have a pretty nice blaster way faster AND better than the current top end at the same price. I'll keep my current machine as back up in case I have some hardware problems. Just keep a copy of the hard drive mirrored.

I might also look for a used top end 21" iMac for a trip I'm going to take. OK for a motor home and with no 17" laptop option at any price its almost a no brainer.

Lachim just built another Hackintosh. I'd do that if I needed it, but I don't.

I'll get a laptop with Linux for browsing. That should be sufficient. My friends are using Linux laptops and even the guys who are not geeks aren't having too many problems.
