Why couldn't the same have taken place without the split? Fractional shares or X-for-Y ratios are allowable.

Your point about cash balances affecting overall ROI is a good one, however. Apple's recent buybacks, for now and in hindsight, boosted ROI because instead of earning essentially 0% interest, that portion of the cash earned what APPL's performance was, which is up double-digits since the buyback. Of course, when and if the stock falls/had fallen, the reverse would have been true. It's a decision to leverage, i.e., throw more eggs in one basket. That can turn out to be a good or bad thing, and either way, increases risk. For AAPL longs recently, that risk turned out to be a good thing.
