* In Mississippi, Sen. Thad Cochran (R) has generally avoided talking about his primary challenger, Chris McDaniel, though that changed yesterday. The incumbent senator called the state senator a dangerous “ extremist” who would leave the state more vulnerable. Their runoff primary is June 24.

* The Senate Conservatives Fund, founded by Jim DeMint to back right-wing candidates in GOP primaries, has a new president: former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli. Cuccinelli is perhaps best known as the culture warrior who lost last year’s gubernatorial race.

* Following the elaborate scheme in Virginia’s state Senate the other day, Republicans now control literally every legislative body – state House and state Senate – in the former confederacy. That hasn’t happened since Reconstruction. [Correction: it turns out this is the second time since Reconstruction, not the first.]
