Sheila,

I would like to suggest "The Visual Investor" by John Murphy. It is an excellent book for beginners to TA. He explains the concepts very simply. I have learned a great deal from it.
It is availble cheapest at Amazon.com if you want to order over the net.

Then, if you want to get in deeper I would suggest "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Robert Edwards and John Magee. It is a huge, reference type book. It contains everthing anyone would possibly want to know about TA.
It is available cheapest at Barns and Noble via the web (7th edition).

I read the first book over and over trying to absorb the simple principles. I use the second book as a reference book to get a deeper explanation about something I am interested in. They make an excellent duo.
