Brian, the AMAT backlog is a buffer allright. What happens after,
if bookings drop? IBD has an interview with J.Morgan today. Here's
the last question and Morgan's answer:

IBD:

When will we know if '98 will be a strong year?

Morgan:

Because of the downturn in the middle of last
year, customers hesitated to purchase. So
they've been pretty conservative since then.
Particularly since DRAM (memory) prices have
continued to be weak . . . . I'd look at bookings
for indications of the revenue a couple quarters
out.

As you can see, Morgan's answer is noncommital. The
November btb is due next week and, knowing how the Street
reacts to that dubious number, I am not optimistic.
