Again this journalist doesn't know what he's talking about. You can already listen to 24bit 48khz audio on any headphones. The digital to analogue converter (DAC chip) does the conversion on the playback device not the headphones.

In fact I think flac files support 24bit 128khz files and I believe a Mac will do that conversion without a khz reduction before it does the digital to analogue conversion. I know for a fact flacs support 96khz and VLC on a Mac will play them no problem. Apple's ALAC files support 24bit/48khz which in my opinion would be pretty tough to distinguish from the best vinyl analogue quality.

If you'd like to confirm that you can already listen to very high bit rate/khz files on your Mac through headphones you can legally download one of these files:

I'll leave it up to you to obtain VLC which is freeware.

An individual sample has no tone, in other words a note like middle C. The frequency of the individual samples gives the file the ability to reproduce a tone.

Bit rate is the ability for a file to have a loudness. 24 bit files divide loudness into smaller divisions than 16 bit (CD quality).

KHZ is the sample rate per second. Higher means smoother stair stepping. (Not exactly but conceptually close.)

So the ability to produce a more accurate analogue wave (actually nearly infinite multiple waves concurrently) is better with higher bit and sample rates.
