Apparently you don't, since addressing a senator as "sir" or "ma'am" is considered a gesture of respect.

Uh........you missed my point. The senator of CA wanted to be called senator rather than ma'am. What the senator wants takes precedence over military protocol. Comprendez?

All senators.......although R senators do make it difficult at time. I mean when they tell us they speak to kings and queens..........well.
