More story telling...it's filled with good news/bad news

I got impatient waiting for the G3/266MT to be shipped from AppleStore today. So I went down to CompUSA and bought a similarly configured G3 from CompUSA. It's a shame because I rather have AAPL make all my money instead of having CompUSA take a cut on the deal.

I met an Apple rep (not CompUSA sales person) that was suppose to go around to the various CompUSA stores in the area to make sure things are running properly etc. First of all she was about 27 and quite attractive. Of course, that's not the reason why I striked a conversation with her. I was just doing my job and trying to gather some info for my fellow investors here at SI (yeah..hehe)

Anyway, she said that the words within the company, up and down the corporate hierarchy is that Apple will make a profit this quarter. She seems to be quite convinced of that. Perhaps its just the typical optimism coming from someone who works for AAPL but it was nice to hear that sales have been brisk. Oh yeah.. she gave me a free Apple keychain, a pen and an erasable pad for the fridge.

On the down side I did manage to dig out the info from another saleswoman that they haven't sold ANY G3 powerbooks at that store. Perhaps the blinking question mark on the G3 Powerbook in display has something to do with it. At least they were trying to fix that. Or perhaps the $5700 price tag is just too steep for the average CompUSA customer.

I'm currently typing from this G3/266 MT beast. I opened it up to install a internal HD. It is by far the most elagant design I have ever seen. The PPC 750 is tiny and you can barely see the 512K L2 cache sticking out under the heatsink. Yes, it's damn fast. Does anything seem different to you guys? Okay so even a G3 can't get rid of all my typos and grammatical errors...

Now for the bad news. I think the video-in circuitry is messed up. I called CompUSA to see if there is another one for me to exchange. I was told that there were no more G3/266 MTs!! Apparently someone had bought the other units within the last two hours. I was told that they had 4 of these earlier and there was at least one unit left when I left the store. So apparently the G3s are selling quite well.
