Ed,
The problems in the middle east will most likely not be resolved until there is a clear and decisive victory that resets the social order. It will likely be very messy for decades more if not longer.
The book The Fourth Turning is about generation cycles. It also touches on the cycles of major wars, minor wars etc. It is a very good read to gain some longer term perspective and specifically the cycles that have existed for centuries in relationship to the shorter cycles that we as investors take advantage of.
