I grew up with people who used shabbos elevators, and that part seems silly to me too. And there are even more "workarounds" that are just as silly sounding.

Heschel's interpretation of the meaning of the Sabbath has absolutely nothing to do with kind of thing though.

You have my sympathy with that one. 40 years ago I was president of a regional tennis association here in Arkansas. The Mormon church was so underrepresented back then that I was the only LDS player in the group. For me it worked out fine. Most matches were scheduled on Saturdays by popular demand, and I could simply keep my own name off the roster for Sunday matches while participating at the local level. I was never a good enough player to advance to state level matches, so never had to choose what to do.
