Very common, but it is of most benefit with stocks that have taken a big hit. Instead of reserving the funds for taxes those funds become tax savings which can then be invested in the stock one year earlier than if you waited until 1998 to sell.

Unfortunately, the plan collapses if anything dramatic happens during those 30 days(IRS mandatory wait period before buying back in).
