Why add the extra complexity of the supernatural, when the natural explains things so well? I feel the same way about people who want to bring space aliens in to the equation. Sure- it could happen- but since there's no evidence, why bother with the conjecture when you don't need to? And let's face it- there's no "debate" really about this. You are proposing a supernatural being that there is zero proof for- based on your conjectures and surmises and wishful thinking. I'm proposing things are obeying natural laws without fantastical elements to them. Now you can take leave of your rational senses- and decide you want the supernatural (that's why it's religion, and "belief"- if it was "fact" most people would agree on it)- but please don't call that debate. That would make every parent disabusing a child about santa in to a "debater". I'd say you have some interesting supernatural "feelings"- and I've got some speculations about natural history, that don't involve much belief- because I can toss mine away on a dime, if it turns out the facts were otherwise. But you probably aren't prepared to toss out god no matter what facts come to light. The person who believes in god, or fairies or elves can always say "But you know I just really FEEL it". Or "I can imagine god SPEAKING to these people." Really? I can't imagine that at all. That sounds like insanity, to me.

And I think the altered state of fasting explains rather well why people might still do it. Though scarcity lasted for a long long time. Plenty of time to ingrain the behavior.
