Hi Don Hurst; Re: "And I, while a fan of Friedman, could not believe how someone such as himself after spending years in that part of the world could believe the BS that was coming out of the WH and Judith Miller in his own paper and also believe the US Military at the point of a gun was going to suddenly change cultures and regional history.";

The ideas of the White House, at that time, seemed to me, to be suspiciously similar to the views of right wing Israelis. When you get enough people with similar ideas around, "group think" enters into it and they become unable to believe that so many brilliant people could possibly be wrong.

A radio talk show host (forgot his name) just now was talking with an author about the fall of Saigon. The usual right wing BS, "we could have stopped them cold by bombing their supply lines", but Ford couldn't do it because Congress made it illegal. But in both cases you have corrupt regimes that are unable to inspire their citizens to sacrifice their lives to keep it around.

And the fact is that with Iraq as well as S. Vietnam, we provided far more than enough weapons for the locals to defend themselves if they'd felt like it. Right now I read that shia clerics are asking for young men to volunteer to fight the sunnis. They're getting "hundreds" of volunteers which of course is woefully insufficient for the task at hand. But funny, I don't remember them asking for young men to volunteer to help the US fight sunni guerillas. And the news is that Iran is sending a few thousand to support the regime. Waaaay too little; I doubt the Iranians have the inclination to bog themselves down in an asian guerilla war. If it was just a matter of Iraq they could do it, but these rebels are supported by very powerful sunni governments.

Friedman's support for the war was not based on the WH reasoning. He arrived at his position independently, IIRC.
