I think it has as much to do with not seeing reality very well. Like you, I have peered at this question all my life.

What I see with most religious people is they just don't really think about it at all. Religion is just part of their culture which they do not question. They just sort of get into it like a hot bath. And it is part of the social conforming trip.

But some people are really hard to figure. One of my wives (the sweetest one - really sweet) we never argued is into Eckankar because her mother is. She is really really smart and logical about most other things?

She is also the director of research for one state Department. I never got it. She is now marrying a very nice passive biological Chemist who is a Lutheran. I am very happy for her as she is so sweet and I don't want her to be alone. I am too old for her now anyway. She is 22 years younger than I. Funny though she pursued me and both families really thought we were a great fit. She is very kind and honest. My mom loved her.

We had a wonderful 11 years together and not one serious argument. But I had to live like a monk and eventually it was just too much. 11 years with no pot or wine.

It's a wiring issue.
has to be more than that

i have one brother and he is totally opposite... he got "saved" in a baptist church in his 20's and today is a full blown social conservative... when Glenn Beck had his daytime show on Fox he was a huge fan... he abhors homosexuals, blacks, etc... but of course he is a "christian"... i remember just before the 2012 potus election he spouted to me the right wing talking point that "half of people don't pay taxes!"... i proceeded to remind him that one of those people he is bitching about is our mother who raised us single-handedly and now lives off social security after working her ass off for 50 years... a large part is peer pressure, social pressure, brainwashing, it's who you hang out with... but then again i do feel like i am wired differently because i did attend church for awhile when i was young but it just wasn't for me... i felt like i would have to lie to myself in order to keep attending
