Longnshort, speaking of which, there are many, many cases where corporations are required to preserve all e-mail correspondence over a certain time period.

This happened to Intel during the antitrust lawsuits of the past decade. Intel had to keep every e-mail being sent back-n-forth to all of the execs and managers so that the law firms can comb through them and find anything incriminating.

Had Intel lost a few years of those e-mails like the IRS conveniently did, they would be held in contempt of court and be fined millions, if not billions of dollars.

But it seems like if the IRS does it, no big deal.
