Looks the same to those on the outside, imo. I mean look at the Iraq war. Dumbest thing I've seen happen in my lifetime- in terms of large US political adventures (Vietnam might have been as stupid- but it started before I was born- so I'm not counting it- because I used the word "lifetime"). Incredibly stupid. But a lot of deluded people got on board with it. And I don't think they were dumb. They just really, really wanted to believe, and they drank the kool aid. Some people have an almost infinite capacity to believe ridiculous stuff- I happen to think the training ground for that is religious indoctrination- which is one reason I'm so against believing in things you can't prove.
