Your codes are a big problem. In California all the buildings are reinforced- so if you go in an old brick one, for example, you'll see steel beams bringing it up to Earthquake code. Unfortunately, there are no codes like that in other places- so when you get the Earthquake, it will be more of a problem. Wood frame single story houses hold up pretty well- as long as you don't add something like brick.
