I'm not going to go down the rabbit hole here. At least not yet. But, just a sample. Your use of the term "religion" ties it to a belief in a certain cosmology (two stories, three stories, whatever) rather than an attempt to address questions concerning the meaning of life. From the place of the second definition, the first is simply a subset of attempts to offer answers. Religion itself, in my view, is a broader category encompassing what many mention as spirituality but could also include non theism (I like Barney Franks' term here), so long as the implications are faced (the anxieties of non transcendental meaning, etc.) Gotta stop here or I'll not get anything else done today.
