David; You seem to know a lot about Trimble, I looked at them
because I'm a boat Capt and we have a unit, it's doggone nice
thing to have..the screen is a map you know..but for one small
problem, we have had to send it back several times, they upgrade
the program..in so doing i belive the new program uses more memory
and it does not lock onto the sats if i put the cd map in,
in other words i'm having to use a work around when i first turn
it on, i have to be sure the cd is not in..then if it don't lock
onto a sat rather fast it seem to get over loaded with calculations
so turn it off ( which clears the memory ) and back on in 30 sec
untill it locks onto the sats..after that i can put the cd in.
thios is a pain but i'd rather use the work around then send it
back in, and once i get it up it sure is nice..magelian is the
brand that sells the most but i don't know if they have as nice
a set as trimble..all in all i like it..but i can imagine that
people who never played around with computers might have some
problems with it. Thought of writing them and telling them to put
in more memory so it don't overload trying to get the sats, but
after all i'm no expert and that may not be the problem..and i doubt
they would pay me much mind.
As for the stock i was tempted but with this down turn in techs
i don't know..seems too it priced up fairly fast already, had i seen it earlyer i would have liked to got some at a lower price..the product is nice and i'm sure they will improve on it..but lets keep in mind it's a compeatitive field..and megelian can sure cut prices..
i have not seen a hand held trimble, do they make one ?..i don't
like hand herlds all that much in my work..but they do sell like hot
cakes. ( becausde they are now cheap ) in some cases cheaper than
loran..which is on the way out.
Another idea I would like to pass onto them is NAVTEX..we have one
built in England..these things are going to be required on a lot
of boats come 1999..and if trimble can produce gps they can produce
a navtex too..i'd rather have one made in the usa.
