That he was. We went to a number of the open mike sessions he hosted at the Gaslight on Tuesday nights. He'd do the opening set, go across the street to The Kettle of Fish, get hammered, then come back and play the closing set. Yet he played and sang some great stuff. Don't know how he did it.

Will tell you one thing. Some of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen were on those Tuesday nites. The Gaslight Cafe' was a small, intimate, room. Doubt they could pack more than 150 in on a good weekend night. All kinds of people showed up. Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Eric Anderson, Patrick Sky, The Holy Modal Rounders, even Simon & Garfunkel. In fact, it was their first, every, public performance.

Anyhow, Tuesday's were slow. A few times, we were able to work our way up to the front table. Most memorable? Think it was late summer, 1963. Dylan just walked in, off the street, about 11 PM. Borrowed Van Ronk's iconic 1952 Gibson J-200 and gave the single greatest performance I've ever seen. Will never forget it, if I live to be 100. Could not believe how charismatic the guy was. Guitar player buddy and were absolutely blown away. Front table. Point blank range.

Indescribable. Life changing.
