Good story. I'm reading a Jo Nesbo novel, "The Redbreast", and he tells a similar story with the new recruits in the second world war when they come to the front. At the end of the war, none of them had any training (or survival skills) so the vets just ignored them as they knew they would be dead in a couple of weeks.
