Obama's comments so far have alluded to being on the side of Shi'ite interests, which would result in a fully Shi'ite Iraq, possibly with a sovereign Curd nation, if I understand it correctly. Is that what you mean by "we already have."
What I meant is what you said earlier in your post:
The position we have had in Iraq, up to now, has been a democratic Iraq which played fair with religious factions.
It seems to me that said democracy would naturally be led by the majority, which is the Shi'ites, but they will only get our blessing if they held true to democratic ideals and religious and cultural tolerance.

The recent insurgency, on the other hand, is clearly against these ideals, which they consider to be Western and therefore "evil." We're clearly not on "their side," which is why Koan's question is rather stupid to begin with.

But then again, Koan isn't really known to think beyond what he reads in the left-wing blogosphere.
