God doesn't decide who lives and dies. There are no whims involved.

It's all random, at least in my opinion it is. I'm not an evangelical type that believes God has a hand in most everything.

But I now see the confusion. You and I are actually in agreement. I wouldn't want any part of that kind of God either. A god who picks and chooses would be patently unfair. When someone walks out of an airplane crash alive saying God saved them and I'm looking at the carnage on the ground, it makes my head explode.
