They gave it up to allow Utah to become part of the Union. To me that seems like a very reasonable compromise? Maybe because I don't consider it a core tenet. Few practiced it. You had to get permission from the church leaders and prove you had the financial wherewithal to support an additional wife. It sounds like you don't like Mormons/Mormonism. Living in Salt Lake, I would have thought you'd enjoy the low crime, good schools, and general polite behavior of the people. In Little Rock, I'm now afraid to go to all but one of the malls there at night. In SLC, that would never cross my mind.
