A couple of factors. One, there were a lot of Dixiecrats. Two, starting in the 1970s, evangelicals flooded into the state.

I knew about the Dixiecrats but I didn't know about the evangelicals. What prompted them to move to TX.........a Jesus sighting?

The tone of the politics has changed markedly from the days when they used tax surpluses from The Boom to make UT and TAMU world class universities and to attract tech companies. These days they would cut taxes and award contracts and grants to cronies of the governor.

That's what I don't get.......how does Perry get away with offering companies buckets of $$$ if they move to TX? He's forever hounding the companies in states like CA, WA, OR, IL, NY, MN, etc trying to get them to move to TX while waving dollars in their faces. Do the teaper conservatives look the other way because its generating jobs?
