Re: Not true at all - unless you mean only in the LAN space. ATM will
continue to grow in the WAN space, and GE will not penetrate there.

SI, you're partially right, partially wrong (ggg).

ATM has already lost the battle to GE in the LAN.

The next battle is in the backbone. It seems like ATM is loosing ground too. The following are articles in NetworkWorld:

If the transmission distance for GE can be expanded further (may be >10 km), then GE will be a threat for ATM in the WAN also.

You posted the other day a news saying that Compaq is going to supply GE switch by buying from an unannounced OEM. exchange2000.com

I was hoping that the OEM will be MRV (through Intel) since Intel has a contract to supply NICs for Compaq's servers. Unfortunately, I found a news in NetworkWorld saying the OEM will be Extreme Network. I think this is the company owned by Tony Lee, the chairman of the GE consortium.

On the layer 3 switch, I still hope that MRV will be the OEM because I don't think Extreme Network is involved in that field.

Sam also mentioned that MRV has just hired a manager from 3Com to head the marketing. Could this is be that MRV is going to expand the West Hills division of MRV to get into retail sales now? I spoke to a gentleman at West Hills a while ago and asked him why this division is also selling products from the competition and he replied that it is beneficial for MRV as it gets the inside track of other companies to know what products sell and what don't.
