Brian,

Why is Intel removing L2 from Slot package?

As the cost of manufacture of P-II dropping sharply, it would make sense to sell a model of P-II without L2 cache to save a few bucks. The purpose of course is to migrate everyone from Socket-7 to Slot I when the cost of a P-II without L2 becoming competitive with Socket-7 CPUs without L2 as well.

Why is Intel following K6 by adding L2 on chip?

This is the dream of all CPU manufacturers! Since K6 does not have L2 on chip, Intel is not following K6 to incorporate L2 on chip.

I hope these all make sense to you now.

John.
