Actually, I heard it on NPR radio one day recently on my drive home from work. I wouldn't represent it as an authoritative source, but not exactly Fox News drivel either.

I'd say it's "kind-of" true, The issue is that very few countries have a "green-card" system like the US. So if you compare the few similar countries (Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), between them they admit about half as many as the US.

But a lot of countries allow people in on a "temporary" basis that can eventually be converted to permanent residence. The OECD released data on these "permanent-type" immigrants in 23 countries, and the other countries admitted over 3 million annually compared with the US one million.

The unemployment rate among foreign-born workers is actually lower than the national average. Asian immigrants are now the single-biggest group of entrants each year - as a group they out-earn native-born folk dramatically.
