The U.S. is O.K. for a while.

30 years from now I'm not so sure, but I'll be dead.

Between global warming and the Chinese having a superior military I'm not so sure I'd care to be alive 30 years from now.

I think carriers will be the equivalent of battleships in WWII - just big, easy targets.

The problem with aircraft carriers is that they are optimized for jets. Not only that, but a particular type, the multi-role fighter. That is limiting.

The Navy has already started to deploy lasers. Rail guns are close. Drones and guided missiles round out the technologies which have been developed since the 1920s when aircraft carriers were new.

Nope, a mobile offshore base is the way to go now. Like a carrier group it is vulnerable to nuclear weapons. But that is about it. Given that several linked together can provide a several thousand foot runway, it can handle a wide range of aircraft. It can incorporate a larger number of missiles than an arsenal ship. Provide a stable platform for rail guns and lasers. And it could house the nuclear reactors to power them. With the Navy working on the technology to make fuel from seawater and CO2, it could support operations for a long time.

it can be positioned anywhere in the world in under a month. Being able to house 3000 troops means it is an invasion force with formidable support.
